First Time Set Up Guide
Please follow the steps below to set up your website for the first time:
1) Modify DNS Settings 4) Set Up Mail Client 7) Promote Your Site
2) Test Domain Access 5) Configure Your Site 8) Analyze Statistics
3) Set Up Mailboxes 6) Upload Your Site 9) Find Sponsors
Step 1)  Modify DNS Settings
Please skip this step of you registered your domain through us.

In order for your website to be accessed, you need to point your domain name to our servers. To accomplish this, go to the website of the registry that handled your domain registration, and select the option to modify your DNS (Domain Name Server) record.

Click here to view the most up to date DNS server settings for your account.

Please enter the DNS settings for your domain provided by our DNS lookup tool. There should be no other DNS servers listed in your registry database except for ours. If you host multiple sites with us, please keep in mind that DNS settings will not necessarily be the same for all your domains. Please refer to our real time DNS lookup tool above for the most accurate settings for each domain.

Please Note:  Some registries will only ask for DNS Names, not IP numbers.

Click here to change your DNS settings if you used Register.com to register your domain name. When prompted, enter the name and password you used to create your domain, and click on "Modify DNS". Check off the "Delete" boxes next to all existing DNS entries, and enter our settings in each of the blank boxes (directly below the settings to be deleted). Then click on "Yes" to enter your changes. You will then be sent a confirmation via e-mail (to the e-mail address you provided at the time your domain was registered) which must be returned in order for these changes to take effect. No changes will be made unless you return that notice.

Click here to change your DNS settings if you used Network Solutions to register your domain name. Enter your domain name, and click "Submit". Select "I want to:" "transfer my Domain Name to another ISP", and click on "Go". Enter your e-mail address (this should be the e-mail address you provided at the time your domain was registered), and click on "Go". You should now see your complete domain name record and contact information. Scroll down about half way through the form to the "Name Server Information" section, and replace the old Primary and Secondary DNS settings with our settings. Click on "Submit This Form For Processing". You will then be sent a confirmation via e-mail (to the e-mail address you provided at the time your domain was registered) which must be returned in order for these changes to take effect. No changes will be made unless you return that notice.

If you have any problems, please call Network Solutions directly at 1-800-779-1710 or 1-888-642-9675.

* It should take your registry from 24 to 72 hours to process these changes.

Please do not change the DNS settings for your account in our control panel unless you are an expert in DNS and know exactly what you are doing. DNS files are configured correctly when new accounts are set up, so any improper modifications will cause your website and e-mail to be inaccessible.

Step 2)  Test Domain Access
You will not be able to receive e-mail at your domain, nor upload or access your website with your domain name until your domain registration is processed, or the DNS settings are changed by your registry (it usually takes from 24 to 72 hours). To confirm your domain is active and DNS settings are correct, access your domain name in a web browser as you would any other website. If you see your new empty web directory or our "Coming Soon" message, your domain is pointed to our servers and is ready for use. If you see something else, and it has been over 72 hours since you registered your domain or changed DNS settings, please contact your registry for support. Also, make sure you provided the correct DNS settings (see step 2) by viewing your domain record through your registry. You can also use our whois tool for the most up to date information about your domain name. Please make sure that the whois record for your domain shows our DNS settings.

Even if your website does not load in your browser as directed above, we suggest that you perform a "traceroute" test of your website from other connection points by clicking here. If after the traceroute test, the resulting IP number matches the IP of our DNS server, your domain will be working for you within the next 24 hours.

If you do not see our Coming Soon message in your browser, your registry confirms that your domain is active and DNS settings are correct, and the traceroute test did not return our IP, please contact our support team.

Please do not continue to the next step until you have confirmed that your domain has been pointed to our servers, and you see our "Coming Soon" message.

Step 3)  Set Up Mailboxes
To set up new mailboxes please follow the steps below:
  1. Login to http://4admin.com, and click on the "E-Mail Manager" icon.
  2. Click on your domain name.
  3. Click on "Mail".
  4. Enter your new mailbox name in the "create new mail name" field, and click on "Add".
  5. Check the "Mailbox" checkbox - this must be done or your mailbox will not work.
  6. Enter the password you want to use to access this box in the "New Password" and the "Confirm" fields.
  7. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on "Update".

If you want to set up multiple mailboxes with one person responsible for checking all incoming mail, you should set up one mailbox such as info@yourname.com, and then use the Catch-All Mailbox or Mail Forwarding to forward messages from other mailboxes at your domain to that main box. This way you will only need to setup and check one mailbox for incoming messages. For instructions on how to set up Auto Responders click here.

Please note: By default, all mail to nonexistent mailboxes is returned to sender.

Step 4)   Set Up Mail Client
To configure reception of your e-mail, choose the option to set up a new mail account in your default mail client (i.e. Outlook Express or Eudora) and enter the following settings for your mail servers:

Incoming Mail Server (POP3): mail.yourdomain.com (without the http://www. prefix)
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): mail.yourdomain.com ( without the http://www. prefix)

For sending mail, you must enable SMTP authentication in your e-mail client.

If you have Outlook Express as your e-mail client software, please follow the instructions below to set up incoming and outgoing mail:

  1. Click on "Tools", "Accounts", and "Mail" tabs.
  2. Click on the "Add" and "Mail" tabs.
  3. Under "Display name", enter the name you want people to see when they receive your messages, and click on "Next".
  4. Enter the complete e-mail address for the account you are trying to set up in the "E-mail address" field, and click on "Next".
  5. Enter mail.yourdomain.com (without the "http://www" prefix) in both the "Incoming Mail Server" and the "Outgoing Mail Server" fields, and click on "Next".
  6. Enter your mailbox password in the "Password" field, and click on "Next".
  7. Click on "Finish".
  8. Click on "Tools", "Accounts", and "Mail" tabs.
  9. Select your newly created mailbox, click on "Properties", and the click on "Servers".
  10. Under "Outgoing Mail Server", check off the "My server requires authentication" box, as our SMTP outgoing mail servers require authentication prior to sending messages.
  11. Send a test message to your new mailbox to verify all settings are correct.

Each mailbox must be set up as a separate account to receive mail, with the exception of mailboxes set up for mail forwarding (you just need to set up reception for the main mailbox which is to receive forwarded mail). For example, suppose you are the only person receiving mail for your website, but you would like 5 separate e-mail addresses (info@domain.com, sales@domain.com, joe@domain.com, etc.), you can set up one mailbox called "info" for mail reception, and either set up a Catch-All Mailbox or Mail Forwarding to forward all other messages to that main box.

You can also receive mail with our Web Based E-Mail feature.

Step 5)  Configure Your Site
Assuming you already have a designed website, you are now almost ready to take it live. Prior to uploading your site to the web, make sure you thoroughly test your website locally, and check for the following:
  1. All the folders within your site are all in either lower case or upper case throughout the entire site and these folders are referenced by their proper case in all instances (i.e. if you have an "images" folder, don't refer to it as "Images" in any of your pages or scripts. Some servers are case sensitive, and will not display a page unless the exact folder and file name is provided.
  2. All your entry (default) pages in each folder are named properly. Default entry pages can be called: "default.htm, default.html, index.htm, index.shtml, index.html, index.php, index.php3, index.php3, default.asp, and index.asp", any other name will not be recognized by our servers. The default page is the first page users see if they access your domain name or any of the folders within your domain (i.e. name.com/folder/).
  3. If someone tries to access a nonexistent page on your site, you can set up a custom error page to appear instead of the normal "404 Not Found" message. The simplest way to set up a custom error page is to create an HTML page called error.htm containing your custom error message, and upload it to your httpdocs directory (www in Windows 2000). For expert users we also provide a custom error page configuration utility accessible through our control panel by selecting the "Custom Error Pages" option. This feature will let you specify any file to use for common web server error message, such as error number 400, 401, 403, 404, 500, 501, and 507.

If you have requested a Windows 2000 server, please follow the additional instructions below to set up your custom error page:

    1) Go to http://4admin.com, and log in under "Website Administration".
    2) Click on "Domains" and then "Properties".
    3) Click on "Error Messages", check the "404" box. and then click on "Edit Properties".
    4) Click on "Browse", locate your error.htm file, and click "OK".
Step 6)  Upload Your Site
You can use our SimpleHTML™ web based file manager (not available for Windows 2000 accounts), your Internet Explorer web browser, Microsoft® FrontPage®, Adobe GoLive, PageMill, Macromedia Dreamweaver, or any FTP program to upload (publish) your website to the Internet. You can upload, copy, create, rename and delete files and directories online as many times as you need, 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

To avoid downtime, you can use your web browser, an FTP client or SimpleHTML to upload your website immediately without waiting for your domain name to be pointed to our servers. You can also view your website using our alternative URL system prior to your domain name transfer in order to make sure it is set up properly. Your FTP host and alternative URL info is e-mailed when your hosting account is activated. You can also view your alternative URL from our control panel by selecting the Preview Website option.

Using SimpleHTML:

For smaller sites, the simplest way to upload and manage your web is using our SimpleHTML web based file manager. Using this free, easy to use tool from your web browser, you can create, rename, and delete files or directories, upload, edit and copy files, and configure cgi scripts (chmod). A limitation of this program is that it only allows uploading up to 5 files at a time. Please login at http://www.simplehtml.com to use this tool.

Using Your Internet Explorer Web Browser:

The Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser has a built in FTP (File Transfer Protocol) utility which allows you to upload and manage your website without purchasing or downloading any additional FTP software. There is no limit to how many files can be uploaded or downloaded at any single time. Please follow the steps below to use IE's FTP utility:

  1. Type in ftp://www.yourdomain.com into the address line of your browser.
  2. Enter your username and password to login.
  3. Double click on the "httpdocs" folder.
  4. Minimize the browser window and open your Windows Explorer and highlight the file or folder you want to upload.
  5. Press the "Control" and "C" keys on your keyboard at the same time to copy.
  6. Maximize the browser window and press the "Control" and "V" keys on your keyboard at the same time to begin uploading.

Once you connect to your web as directed above, you will also be able to create new directories, as well as rename and delete existing files and directories.

Using An FTP Client Program:

If you do not already have an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client program installed, we recommend CuteFTP. You can download and install Cute FTP by clicking here.

To upload your site using FTP, connect to your domain name (without the http://www prefix, i.e. yourdomain.com). Enter the user name and password you created when you opened your hosting account. After you are logged in:

  1. Double click on the "httpdocs" folder. This folder contains all your web pages and directories with the exception of the "cgi-bin" directory, which is a part of your top, domain name directory.
  2. Highlight all the files and folders in your source drive (usually drive C on your local computer) to be uploaded to the Internet, then drag and drop them into the "httpdocs" folder. This will initiate the uploading process. Make sure to wait until all the files are transferred and you see a "Done" message.
  3. Enter your domain name into a web browser to make sure your site is loading properly, and there are no missing links, images or files. If there are missing pages, repeat step 2 for those files only, and test again.

Using Microsoft FrontPage:

Copy And Paste Method:

  1. In FrontPage 2000, click on "File", and then "Open Web".
  2. In the "Folders" prompt, select "Web Folders", and enter your full domain name (http://www.yourname.com), and then click "Open".
  3. Enter your main account user name and password when prompted and click "OK".
  4. When you see your web folders displayed, click on "Open". After a few seconds you should see a blank white page.
  5. Click on "View Folders" tab to display your main web folder. Your web folder should open to the left of your main screen, displaying all of its contents.
  6. Open your Windows Explorer and then highlight the files or folders you want to upload and press "Control C" (copy) on your keyboard.
  7. Go back to FrontPage and double click on the folder you wish to upload to. When you see the contents of that folder, press "Control V" (paste) on your keyboard.
  8. Wait until the uploading stops to access your domain name in a web browser to make sure your site is working properly, and there are no missing links, images or pages.

Publish Method:

An alternate method to publish your website is to use the FrontPage "Publish" function. Although this method is more convenient, as it automatically fixes broken links and improper file references, we believe it is not as reliable as the simple copy and paste method above (sometimes links can be changed without your knowledge or intention and cause unforeseen errors). However, if you prefer to upload this way, please follow the instructions below.

  1. Click on "File", and then "Open Web". Click on the down arrow button or the "Up Level" (yellow folder icon with an up arrow at the top) icon until you find your local drive and the website folder. Highlight your website folder and click on "Open".
  2. Click on "File" and "Publish Web" (towards the bottom of the menu).
  3. When prompted, enter your user name and password and press "Enter".
  4. Wait until the uploading stops, and then enter your domain name into a web browser to make sure your site is loading properly, and there are no missing links, images or pages. If there are missing files or links, check your original file for proper references, and use the copy and paste method to upload the modified page(s).

* Using FTP to upload pages created by FrontPage may disable some functions.
** Your cgi-bin directory cannot be accessed with FrontPage.

Step 7)  Promote Your Site
When you feel that your website is complete and you are fully satisfied with its performance and appearance, it's time to submit it to the search engines. Submission of your website to major search engines is included free with our Standard Hosting plan. Click here if you are ready to submit your site now, or you can visit our Build Traffic section for more information and helpful hints.
Step 8)  Analyze Statistics
To access your statistics page, go to http://4admin.com, enter your user name and password, select the "Statistics" option, and click "Enter". Use the navigation buttons on the left side to select the reports you would like to view. Some of reports that available are: sites that referred visitors to your site, keywords visitors entered on search engines to find your site, number of visitors to each page of your site, entry and exit pages, and much more. Statistics are your best tool for analyzing the effectiveness of your site.
Step 9)  Find Sponsors
No matter what type of website you have, there are affiliate programs that will pay commission for promoting additional products and services on your site. There are usually no fees to join most affiliate programs, all you have to do to start making money is place a link to a sponsor's website. Our Make Money section provides a list of recommended affiliate programs, as well as links to other affiliate directories.
Control Panel Guide
Administration of your website can be done in real time with our on line control panel. 6. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on "Update".

To edit the forwarding address for any alias, repeat steps 1 - 5 above.

To delete a mail forwarding alias, click on the "Remove" button next to that mailbox.

Please note that you can have a full POP3 mailbox that receives mail and forwards mail at the same time.

Catch-All Mailbox: This feature forwards all incoming e-mail messages sent to nonexistent e-mail addresses at your domain to a designated internal or external mailbox.
  1. Login to http://4admin.com and click on the E-Mail Manager icon.
  2. Click on your domain name.
  3. Click on "Preferences".
  4. Under "Mail to nonexistent user", check off the "Catch to address" box, and in the field below enter the complete e-mail address (including the domain name, i.e. john@domain.com) of the mailbox you want to forward all messages directed to non-existent mailboxes at your domain.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on "Update".
To remove the Catch-All mailbox, repeat steps 1 - 4 above, except, check off the "Bounce with phrase" box, and enter the message you want sent back. This will automatically bounce all messages sent to non-existent mailboxes at your domain.

To specify another Catch-All mailbox, repeat steps 1 - 4 above.

Mail Groups: This feature enables automatic forwarding of multiple copies of e-mail messages to a designated group of recipients.
  1. Login to http://4admin.com and click on the E-Mail Manager icon.
  2. Click on your domain name.
  3. Click on "Mail".

  10. Enter your message in the "Answer text" field.
  11. If you would like to attach a file to be sent with the auto reply, select the file you want to upload in the "Attach files" box, and click "Add".
  12. Check the "Respond Once in __ days" option and enter a 1 for the number of days. This would send an auto reply to each incoming message only once per day. We recommend that you never check the "always" option, as doing so could result in infinite auto response messages bounced back to your mailbox in the event an incoming message comes from an invalid or non working e-mail address (this would disable your e-mail, and result in total loss of all your incoming messages). We also recommend that you leave the number of e-mail messages to store at 1000, the default value.
  13. Click on "Update". Please note, if you want the message forwarded after an automatic reply is sent, we suggest that you set up Mail Forwarding for that mailbox or alias, and leave the "Forward request to e-mail" field blank for the auto responder.

To delete an auto responder, click on the "Remove" button next to it.

To edit any auto responder, repeat steps 1 - 11 above.

Note: Please be careful not to send a test message to your auto responder mailbox from the same return address, as this can cause the auto responder to flood your mailbox with hundreds of messages. If this happens, the only way to stop the auto responder from sending messages is to delete it in the control panel.

Secure Directories: Password protected directories require visitors to enter a user name and password in order to access that directory or any file in it.
  1. Login to http://4admin.com and click on the Protected Directories icon.

  2. Click on your domain name.
  3. Click on "Web Users".
  4. Enter the name of your anonymous FTP directory (this can be any name up to 8 characters long) in the "New web user" field, and click on "Add".
  5. Enter "anonymous" in the "New password" and "Confirm" fields, and click on "Update".
DNS Manager: This utility allows real time management of DNS records, such as NS, A, CNAME, and MX.
  1. Login to http://4admin.com and click on the DNS Manager icon.
  2. Scroll down and review the detailed instructions provided.
  3. Add or modify an entry.
  4. Click on "Save Changes".

This feature is designed for advanced users only, as incorrect DNS settings can cause your website and e-mail to be inaccessible. Please allow 24 to 48 hours for new DNS settings to take effect.

Subdomains: Subdomains are domains created by the owner of any root domain that become an extension of the main domain (i.e. you.yourname.com). Subdomains can point to your main site (using either Domain Forwarding or a Unique IP address) or any external IP address.
  1. Login to http://4admin.com and click on the DNS Manager icon.
  2. Scroll down and review the detailed instructions provided under "Subdomains".
  3. Click on "Save Changes".

By default, you can point your subdomains to any IP address. Please note, you must have a unique IP address in order to be able to point a subdomain to your home page on our server. To forward your subdomain to a page or directory within your website, you will need to have Domain Forwarding enabled for your account. To add a Unique IP or Domain Forwarding option to your account, click here.

Please allow 24 to 48 hours for your new subdomains to be accessible on the Internet.

Anonymous Upload
Like in Anonymous FTP this enables anyone to upload files into your "anonymous" web directory. The difference between this feature and Anonymous FTP is that users do not need an FTP client program to upload files, instead they would simply use a web browser. This is convenient for any novice user to upload photos or large files as an alternative to e-mail attachments.

To enable this feature, you simply need to create a directory in your httpdocs folder called "anonymous". To disable it, you would delete that folder.

The link to your Anonymous Upload utility is: http://4admin.com/anonymous/?d=yourdomain.com.

The link to upload using SSL is: https://www.4admin.com/anonymous/?d=yourdomain.com.

Web Based E-Mail
This feature allows you to send e-mail, as well as receive, save, and delete e-mail messages in all your mailboxes (even those not hosted with us) from any location, using a simple web browser and an Internet connection. You can access your messages without using any e-mail client software, and the messages you send and receive are not tracked by your ISP or employer.

By default your master account user name and password are used to access our web based e-mail. You can also set up a separate password for accessing only web based e-mail to distribute to users who should not have access to any other feature of your account. This is done by going to our Update Contact Information page, and entering a password in the WebMail Password field.

Sending Mail
  1. Go to http://www.4mail.com, enter your user name and password, and click "Enter".
  2. Enter your or any return e-mail address in the "From" field.
  3. Enter the recipient's e-mail address in the "To" field.
  4. Enter the subject of your message in the "Subject" field.
  5. Select delivery options such as Message Type (plain or HTML) and level of priority.
  6. Finally, enter your message and click on "Send Message".

Receiving E-Mail:

  1. Go to http://www.4mail.com, enter your user name and password, and click "Enter".
  2. Click on "Receive Mail", and enter "mail.yourdomain.com" for server name, your mailbox name (if your mailbox is info@yourname.com, you would enter "info"), and your mailbox password.
  3. Click on "Get Mail".

Real Audio / Video
Your Real Audio and Video files can be uploaded to any directory within your domain. Real Streaming media files should end with .rm. Links can be placed from any webpage by using any of the following protocols:
  1. PNA (Progressive Networks Audio) - Example: pnm://yourname.com/file.rm. When users click on this link, their Real Player will automatically be launched and play the file, if they do not have Real Player installed, they will be prompted to do so. PNA is the proprietary client-server protocol designed and used by RealNetworks in RealSystem versions 5.0 and earlier. The ability to serve via PNA is supported in RealServer for compatibility with older versions of RealPlayer.
  2. RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) Example: rtsp://yourname.com/file.rm. When users click on this link, their Real Player will automatically be launched and play the file, if they do not have Real Player installed, they will be prompted to do so. RTSP is a client-server protocol designed specifically for serving multimedia presentations. It is an open standard, and very useful for large-scale broadcasting. Only RTSP can deliver SureStream™ files with their multiple bandwidth encoding. SMIL, RealText, and RealPix also require RTSP.
  3. HTTP - Example: http://yourname.com/file.ram. This is the least efficient delivery method, but is supported by most older browsers. When using this format, a text file with a .ram extension must be created with the URL of the real .rm file. Both the .ram and .rm files can reside in the same directory. File example: in the new file called, file .ram, the top line would read - http://www.yourname.com/file.rm (the path to the source streaming file), and both files would be placed in the same http directory.

Secured Page™ SSL
When you receive a confirmation of your SecuredPage account, you will be provided a folder name (usually a four digit number). This will be your permanent SecuredPage URL, to which you will be linking your main website. For example, if your folder number is 1000, your SecuredPage URL would be: https://www.securedpage.com/1000/, so consequently, all your SSL files would be at that URL.
Uploading SSL Files

Using Our Web Based File Manager (no software required):

  1. Login to http://4admin.com.
  2. Click on the "SecuredPage File Manager" icon.
  3. Follow the instructions provided.

Using FTP:

  1. For FTP Host, enter securedpage.com.
  2. Enter your SecuredPage directory number without the ~ character for your user name.
  3. Enter your main account password.
  4. Upload your files using your FTP client's commands.

You can request your SecuredPage directory to be set up with FrontPage support. To enable FrontPage for your SSL files, please contact our support team at support@webmasters.com.

Using FrontPage:

  1. Click on "File" and then "Open Web".
  2. At the "Folders" prompt, select "Web Folders", enter your SecuredPage Directory address (http://www.securedpage.com/yourfolder), and click "Open".
  3. Enter your main account user name and password when prompted and click "OK".
  4. When you see your SSL folder displayed, click on "Open". After a few seconds you should see a blank white page.
  5. Click on "View Folders" tab to display your main SSL folder. Your SSL folder should open to the left of your main screen, displaying all of its contents.
  6. Open your Windows Explorer and then highlight the files or folders you want to upload and press "Control C" (copy).
  7. Go back to FrontPage and double click on the folder you wish to upload to. When you see the contents of that folder, press "Control V" (paste).
  8. Wait until the uploading stops to access your SecuredPage directory in a web browser to make sure your site is working properly, and there are no missing links, images or pages.

An alternate method to uploading your secure pages is to use the FrontPage "Publish" function.

Database Administration
Please follow the instructions below to set up and manage your database. Our Online Database Administrator performs most basic and advanced SQL functions. Please note, you should be somewhat familiar with SQL to use this feature.
Step 1)
  1. Login to http://4admin.com.
  2. Click on the "Database Manager" icon.
  3. You will be prompted with another log in window into which you should enter your user name and password again, and click on "OK".
Step 2)
  1. After you access the Database Manager, you will see the name of your database (the same as your user name) on the left. Click on your database name.
  2. You should see all your tables listed below the database name. If this is your first time setting up this database, you should see no tables listed. Scroll down to the "Create New Table" section to create your table.
  • Please click on the "Documentation" link, if you are unsure of any function or command.
Step 3)
  1. To edit existing tables, click on the appropriate table name on the left side of the screen.
  2. When you see your table data displayed, you can click on the appropriate links to browse, select, and insert data, as well as change and drop fields, and define the data fields as primary, index, or unique. Other functions should be self explanatory if you are familiar with SQL.
Step 4) When you are finished, click on "Log Out".
Domain Forwarding
This utility is designed to simplify management of accounts with multiple domain names. There are three functions that are managed through this utility for each forwarded domain:
  1. The forwarding URL (internal or external domain, directory or web page). Domains can be forwarded to display the destination URL (Standard Forwarding) or the actual domain name that was typed in (Frame Forwarding). For example, if a user types in a domain that was set up under Standard Forwarding, he or she will see the actual URL of the web page the domain was forwarded to in the browser's address bar, while under Frame Forwarding, only the original domain that was entered will be displayed without revealing the actual forwarding URL.
  2. The default catch-all forwarding e-mail address (internal or external). This enables all messages sent to a domain (i.e. sales@domain.com, bob@domain.com, etc.) to be forwarded to a designated mailbox at another domain or server without the sender knowing that his or her message was forwarded.
  3. The DNS record. This provides access to each domain's DNS zone file with the ability to add, delete or modify entries such as mail exchanger (MX) records, IP pointing (IN A), IN CNAME (subdomains), and name servers (IN NS). Since improper DNS entries can cause a domain to become inaccessible, this utility should only be used by users with advanced knowledge of DNS syntax.

Please follow the steps below to set up domains for forwarding.

  1. Login to http://4admin.com.
  2. Click on the "Domain Forwarding" icon.
  3. Follow the instructions provided.
Anonymous Mail
If you selected the Anonymous Mail option, you can set up your mailbox to send and receive mail using your e-mail client program, or our 4Mail Web Based E-Mail. Your mailbox information will be provided to you when your account is set up.
Troubleshooting Guide
Problem: When users enter my domain name into a web browser, they get a "The page cannot be displayed" message, or a "Coming Soon" message from our domain registry.
Possible Cause: Your domain name is not pointed at our servers. Check with your registry to see if this was done correctly (see step 1 and step 2).
Problem: I have uploaded my entire site, but when I access my domain, I still see your "Coming Soon" message.
Possible Cause: Your default page is not called "default.htm, default.html, index.htm, index.html, index.shtml, or index.php3". Please make sure your default page is named properly, see step 5.
Problem: I cannot send e-mail to any e-mail addresses outside of my domain name.
Possible Cause:
  1. You did not check off the "My server requires authentication" box to enable SMTP Authentication in your e-mail client.
  2. Your ISP may be purposely blocking your ability to send e-mail using any SMTP mail servers other than theirs. Some ISP's do this to reduce Spam. If this is the case, you will need to list your ISP's SMTP server as the outgoing mail server, and use it to send mail. Please contact your ISP for their server information, or if you want to make sure other mail servers are not being blocked.
Problem: I cannot receive e-mail at some or any of my e-mail addresses.
Possible Cause:
  1. If you cannot access your domain name either, your domain name is not pointed to our servers. Please make sure you have followed the instructions correctly in step 1 and step 2.
  2. You have not set up your e-mail reception accounts properly (see step 4).
Problem: I cannot log on to my site via FTP or FrontPage.
Possible Cause:
  1. You have changed your FTP or FrontPage log in password. You can view your FTP and FrontPage user name and password by following item b of the Website Administration section.
  2. Your FTP client or FrontPage program is not configured or is not working properly. Please make sure when you specify the web address to upload to, you only specify your domain name without any prefixes such as ftp, http or www.
  3. If you cannot access your domain name either, your domain name is not pointed to our servers. Please make sure you have followed the instructions correctly in step 1 and step 2.
Problem: I have uploaded my entire site, but some images and files are not displaying.
Possible Cause:
  1. Your files or folders are not referred to properly in your program code. Some web servers are case sensitive, so do not refer to your "images" folder as "Images", and so on (see step 5).
  2. The image, file or folder your are attempting to access does not exist. Make sure that the path is correct in all references and upload the file or folder again.
Problem: My site takes too long to load.
Possible Cause:
  1. You may have missing or very large image files. Try to avoid using images that are more than 15 KB in size, as they will impact the loading speed of your site significantly.
  2. There may be something wrong with your ISP or your modem. Try to access other sites to make sure this is not the case.
Problem: When I upload forms I created with FrontPage, validation and submit functions do not work at all.
Possible Cause: You may have used FTP to upload those pages. If you want all FrontPage functions to work properly, you must use FrontPage to upload all your web pages.
Problem: I cannot access my website with a browser, FTP or FrontPage, nor receive e-mail for my domain.
Possible Cause: This is probably caused by a network outage. You should test the network to determine if the problem is on our end or with your ISP.
Problem: When I try to send e-mail, I get a "No Socket Error".
Possible Cause: This error means that use of our mail server is being blocked by your ISP. Unfortunately, some ISP's block their clients from using any outgoing SMTP mail server other than their own. If your ISP does this, you will not be able to use our or any other mail servers except those provided by your ISP. If you do not want to switch ISP's, your only solution is to use your ISP's outgoing mail server to send your e-mail (please contact them for complete details and instructions).

DSN's (MS Access)

Our Windows 2000 hosting accounts do not require the setup and use of DNS's. If you prefer to setup a DSN for your database, our control panel allows you to instantly create DSN's. To create DSN's using our control panel, please go to http://4admin.com and log in under "Website Administration". For DSNless connections, please use the following code:

Set conn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
DSNtemp="DRIVER={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)}; "
DSNtemp=dsntemp & "DBQ=F:\webspace\ntadmin\username\domain.com\www\file.mdb"
conn.Open DSNtemp

FrontPage Forms

If you used FrontPage to set up forms that post to an e-mail address, FrontPage will not send form data via e-mail to a mailbox outside of your domain name (external mailbox) for security reasons. In order for your form to submit properly, you must either have its results posted to a mailbox within your domain (internal mailbox), or create an alias that is forwarded to the external mailbox that you want the form results to post to. You would specify the alias as the mailbox your form should post to, and then the data will be automatically forwarded to your external mailbox.

.htaccess Files

.htaccess files can be uploaded into any directory in your web to manually create password protected directories. More information regarding setup and configuration of these files is available at http://apachetoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2000-07-19-002-01-NW-LF-SW. .htaccess files are designed for advanced Apache users, so we recommend that you use our control panel for setting up password protected directories, unless you know the proper syntax.
